Hartford, Connecticut — A Connecticut community is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old high school senior who was shot and killed while waiting for a ride home, just months before he was set to graduate.
Authorities identified the victim as Camden Siegal, a student at Hall High School in West Hartford.
Police say the teen was caught in a random shooting outside PeoplesBank Arena in downtown Hartford during the early morning hours of February 22.
Investigators confirmed that Siegal was not the intended target, and the case remains under active investigation.
Police discovered victim after hearing gunfire
According to the Hartford Police Department, officers who were patrolling the area heard gunshots on Ann Street around 1:49 a.m.
Responding officers quickly located an unresponsive gunshot victim at the scene.
Police transported the victim to a local hospital in extremely critical condition.
Authorities later confirmed the victim was Camden Siegal.
Second victim also hospitalized
Investigators said another person was also injured during the shooting.
A man in his 20s arrived at a hospital in a private vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officials said the second victim was listed in critical but stable condition and is expected to recover.
Police have not publicly identified that individual.
Teen was waiting for ride home when shooting happened
Investigators say Siegal had been waiting for someone to pick him up when the gunfire erupted. Police confirmed the teen was not the intended target of the shooting.
Authorities say detectives are continuing to follow leads as they search for the person responsible.
No suspect has been identified as of now, according to police.
Community mourns promising student-athlete
Siegal died from his injuries on February 24, two days after the shooting.
His death was confirmed in a message to the community by West Hartford Superintendent of Schools Paul Vicinus.
The superintendent described Siegal as a “multi-sport athlete, dedicated scholar, and genuine friend to many.”
Siegal was a member of the Hall High School Class of 2026 and had built a strong reputation among classmates, teachers, and coaches.
Family remembers teen’s kindness and impact
Siegal’s family shared an emotional statement remembering their son.
“Camden was the light of our lives, and we are devastated and heartbroken by his loss,” the family said.
They described him as someone who touched many lives through kindness, support, and genuine care for others.
Family members also said his positive spirit made a lasting impact on those around him.
Organ donation saved multiple lives
According to family members, Siegal had chosen to become an organ donor, reflecting what they described as his generous nature.

Funeral and memorial held for teen
A funeral service for Siegal was held February 26 at Emanuel Synagogue.
The community has also established a memorial fund in his name to support academic and athletic scholarships for local youth.
Siegal is survived by his mother Elizabeth Fisher, his brother Hayden Siegal, and several extended family members.
Officials say the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
