Accused Multi-City Shooter Dies in DeKalb County Jail as Victim’s Family Holds Vigil

DECATUR, GA — Olaolukitan Adon Abel, the man accused of a terrifying multi-city shooting spree that spanned across Brookhaven and Decatur, has died after being found unresponsive in his jail cell Tuesday night.

The death occurred at approximately 6:48 p.m., nearly at the exact moment that loved ones of one of his alleged victims were gathered for a prayer vigil. Despite lifesaving measures by jail staff and medical workers, Abel was pronounced dead at 7:17 p.m.

A Trail of Violence Across DeKalb

Abel had been held in connection with a violent spree that began in the early hours of April 13. The case had gripped the local community due to the seemingly random and brutal nature of the attacks:

  • Brookhaven: Tony Matthews was shot at the Kroger on Peachtree Road. Tragically, Matthews succumbed to his injuries this past Sunday.
  • Decatur: Lauren Bullis was discovered on Battle Forest Drive, having been both shot and stabbed to death.
  • Wesley Chapel Road: Prianna Weathers was shot outside a Checkers restaurant.

The news of Abel’s death brings a sudden, unexpected end to the legal proceedings that many victims’ families were hoping would provide justice.

Sheriff’s Office Launches Internal Review

DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox confirmed the death late Tuesday night. While the sudden passing of an inmate in custody often raises eyebrows, officials are currently downplaying any suggestions of violence within the facility.

“In accordance with agency policy, a standard internal review has been initiated to examine the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. Officials added that there is “no indication of criminal activity or foul play” at this stage of the investigation.

Questions Remain as Medical Examiner Steps In

While the Sheriff’s Office has begun its internal check, the official cause of death remains a mystery. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office is now tasked with performing an autopsy to determine exactly what led to the 6:48 p.m. medical emergency.

The timing of the death has added a layer of somber irony to the case. As Abel was being pronounced dead, the community was coming together to honor the lives he was accused of shattering. For the families of Tony Matthews, Lauren Bullis, and Prianna Weathers, the focus remains on healing, even as the criminal case reaches an abrupt conclusion.
