Chicago, Illinois — An 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student was tragically killed early Thursday morning after a gunman opened fire on a group near a beach close to campus, authorities confirmed.
The shooting occurred around 1:15 a.m. on March 19 at Tobey Prinz Beach, located near the university’s Lake Shore campus.
The victim, identified as Sheridan Gorman, was walking with friends when a suspect suddenly fired shots toward the group.
“Police say the student was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.”

According to investigators, a male suspect wearing a face mask approached and fired in the direction of the group without warning.
Authorities believe Gorman was not the intended target, making the incident even more shocking.
No other individuals were injured during the shooting.
“The victim appears to have been an unintended target in the attack,” officials said.
Witness describes terrifying moments
A nearby resident described hearing a loud noise followed by screams shortly after the shooting.
“We heard one pop… we thought it was fireworks,” the neighbor said.
Moments later, the situation became clear.
“About 20 minutes later, there were blood-curdling screams,” the witness added.
The sudden escalation left nearby residents shaken as emergency responders arrived on scene.
University calls incident a ‘tragic loss’
Loyola University Chicago President Mark C. Reed confirmed Gorman’s identity and addressed the campus community following the incident.
“This is a tragic loss,” Reed said in a statement.
University officials said they are working closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
They also reassured students that there is no ongoing threat to campus at this time.
Support services and vigil announced
In response to the tragedy, the university has made counseling and support services available for students and staff.
A vigil has also been scheduled to honor Gorman and support the grieving campus community.
