Del Rio, Texas – Federal authorities have seized more than $2.2 million worth of illegal drugs at a Texas border crossing, after officers discovered cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl hidden inside a vehicle during an inspection.
The major bust highlights ongoing efforts to stop dangerous narcotics from entering U.S. communities.
Vehicle flagged for secondary inspection
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the incident occurred on March 10 at the Del Rio Port of Entry, when officers referred a vehicle for additional screening.
The SUV, a 2016 GMC Yukon driven by a 32-year-old U.S. citizen, was selected for a secondary inspection using both canine units and advanced scanning technology.
“Officers conducted a thorough inspection that led to the discovery of concealed narcotics,” officials said.
Large quantities of drugs discovered
During the search, authorities uncovered multiple packages of suspected drugs hidden within the vehicle.
Officials reported seizing:
- 117.33 pounds of suspected cocaine
- 23.14 pounds of suspected heroin
- 11.5 pounds of suspected fentanyl
The combined estimated street value of the narcotics is $2,279,351.
“This triple seizure prevented a significant amount of dangerous drugs from reaching communities,” officials stated.
Authorities highlight impact of seizure
Border officials emphasized the importance of intercepting these substances, particularly fentanyl, which has been linked to a surge in overdose deaths nationwide.
“This load will not reach American streets and will not inflict harm on our communities,” a CBP official said.
The seizure underscores the ongoing risks posed by trafficking networks attempting to move drugs across the border.
Driver arrested, investigation ongoing
Following the discovery, authorities seized both the vehicle and the narcotics.
The driver was taken into custody by Homeland Security Investigations agents, who are now leading the case.
“The investigation remains ongoing as agents work to determine the full scope of the operation.”
Officials have not yet released additional details about the suspect or whether others may be involved.
