Marion County, Florida – A heartbreaking accident in Marion County claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle in his family’s driveway on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The tragic incident has left a family devastated and prompted urgent pleas for increased driveway safety awareness.
Olyver “Ollie” Couch was playing outside his family’s home when he was accidentally hit by a car operated by a family friend. According to his mother, Paula Couch, the driver was unaware that the toddler had moved behind the vehicle as it was preparing to leave.
Tragic Driveway Accident
Authorities confirmed that the accident occurred in the family’s driveway. Olyver had reportedly been playing nearby when the vehicle began to move. The family friend operating the car did not realize the child was behind it at the time.
Driveway incidents involving young children are often sudden and devastating. Toddlers can move quickly and quietly, making them difficult to spot—especially if they are crouched or positioned in a vehicle’s blind spot.
The loss has deeply shaken the Couch family and their community.
Parents Share Emotional Plea for Awareness
In the wake of the tragedy, Paula Couch is urging drivers everywhere to double-check their surroundings before moving their vehicles.
“I just want people to be aware of what’s behind your vehicle,” she said. “Just look, even if you think you already looked, just look again, get out and check, just check the wheel wells, check all of it, because they may be already crouched down playing. Pay attention, just check.”
Olyver’s father, Michael, echoed that message, emphasizing the importance of vigilance.
“Everybody just needs to pay attention. Walk behind your car. Look. It don’t matter how many times it takes,” he said.
Their message is simple but urgent: take extra time, even if it feels repetitive. A few additional seconds could prevent an irreversible tragedy.
Community Support for the Family
Friends describe Paula as a devoted mother who centered her life around her children. Alecia Thomas, a close friend, shared that Paula “lives for her kids” and works tirelessly to provide for them.
“She’s the best mom, she provides for them, she works her butt off for those kids,” Thomas said. “I can’t even describe the pain she’s going through.”
Olyver was the youngest of four brothers, ages 4, 7 and 12. His sudden death has left a profound void in the family’s home.
In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been created to help the Couch family with unexpected funeral expenses. Community members have begun offering financial support and condolences as the family navigates this unimaginable loss.
A Life Remembered
Paula shared a simple yet heartbreaking reflection about her son: “He will forever be two.”
For the Couch family, Olyver will always remain the joyful toddler they knew and loved. As they mourn, they hope that sharing their story will prevent similar accidents from happening to other families.
Their message to drivers is clear—slow down, look carefully, and check again. A small moment of caution could save a life.
