Invest 90L Raises Gulf Coast Tropical Development Odds To 50%

HOUSTON, TX – The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has increased the odds of tropical development to 50% over the next seven days, triggering a severe flash flood threat for millions of residents from Texas to Georgia.

First Invest of the 2026 Season

The system has been officially designated as Invest 90L, marking the first invest of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. While forecasters are monitoring the low probability of this system developing into Tropical Storm Arthur, the immediate danger stems from widespread, torrential rainfall.

Deep tropical moisture is combining with a stalled cold front and a circulation system moving out of northern Mexico, creating a setup for slow-moving, heavy thunderstorms.

Level 3 Flood Threat for Major Cities

The FOX Forecast Center has issued a Level 3 out of 4 flood risk daily through Thursday for various parts of the region. Widespread and locally catastrophic flooding is expected as the system lingers through midweek.

The highest risk zones include popular metropolitan areas that could see 5 to 8 inches of rain:

  • Houston, TX (Under Level 3 threat through Tuesday)
  • Corpus Christi, TX (Under Level 3 threat through Tuesday)
  • Jackson, MS

Coastal Winds and Lingering Threats

In addition to flash flooding, the northwestern portion of the Gulf region will experience gusty coastal winds and heavy tropical downpours.

Flood watches are rapidly expanding across the impacted states. Forecasters warn that depending on the exact track of the circulation, dangerous flash flood conditions could easily extend through Friday and potentially stretch into next weekend. Local authorities are urging residents in low-lying areas to monitor local alerts and avoid flooded roadways.
