Council Votes To Designate Gillian’s Wonderland Pier For Rehabilitation

OCEAN CITY, NJ – The future of the iconic Gillian’s Wonderland Pier took a major step forward Thursday evening following a crucial vote by the Ocean City Council.

The Council’s Decision

In a 5-2 vote, council members approved designating the historic boardwalk site as an “area in need of rehabilitation.” This decision officially opens the door for formal negotiations between the city and the property’s current owner, ICONA Resorts.

The vote comes after months of uncertainty. Eustice Mita, the owner of ICONA Resorts, had previously stated he would be forced to sell the property if the city did not grant the rehabilitation designation.

Luxury Hotel Proposals Face Resistance

ICONA Resorts has proposed building a 252-room luxury hotel on the site, named “Icona in Wonderland.” The company currently operates upscale hotel properties in nearby Avalon, Cape May, and Diamond Beach.

However, the hotel plan has met with notable resistance from local residents who are concerned about the changing character of the historic boardwalk. The new designation allows the city to have more oversight and input into what ultimately gets built.

End of a Boardwalk Era

Gillian’s Wonderland Pier officially closed its doors on October 13, 2024, ending a 94-year run. The amusement park had been entertaining generations of families on the Ocean City Boardwalk since 1929.

Former owner and Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian stated at the time of the closure that the historic family-owned park was no longer financially viable.
