Air Conditioner Thefts Leave Center Line Residents Facing Severe Heat

CENTER LINE, MI – Police are investigating a wave of brazen air conditioner thefts in a local neighborhood, leaving multiple families without cooling just ahead of a major summer heatwave.

Targeted For Copper

According to Center Line police, at least four air conditioning units were stolen late last week from the Kramer Homes co-op community. Investigators revealed that similar thefts have also been reported in the neighboring city of Warren, suggesting a wider pattern.

Residents believe the thieves are targeting the heavy units—which can weigh around 100 pounds—specifically to strip and sell the valuable copper inside for quick cash.

Single Mom Left Facing $6,000 Bill

The timing of the thefts has left the community highly vulnerable. With extremely hot temperatures in the forecast for next week, residents are scrambling to find alternative ways to stay cool.

Maggie Demos, a local resident and single mother, discovered her unit was stolen last Friday. After receiving a replacement quote of nearly $6,000, she expressed deep concern.

“I don’t have the money for that,” Demos said, noting that her temporary window unit is barely cooling her home. She is now planning beach days just to escape the upcoming indoor heat.

Neighborhood Reacts With Increased Security

The audacity of the thieves, who managed to unhook and carry away the heavy equipment undetected, has shocked the neighborhood. In response to the crime spree:

  • The Kramer Homes co-op administration is increasing security patrols across the property.
  • Individual homeowners are taking matters into their own hands by installing personal security cameras to protect their remaining property.

Center Line and Warren police departments are urging anyone who notices suspicious vehicles or late-night activity around residential HVAC units to contact local authorities immediately.
