ROSEDALE, MD – A CSX train crashed into a vehicle Thursday morning at a private railway crossing in Rosedale, renewing local concerns over a stretch of tracks notorious for dangerous accidents.
The Thursday Morning Crash
According to CSX officials, the train “came in contact” with the vehicle around 7:30 a.m. at the Todds Lane crossing.
Emergency crews responded to the scene immediately. While the cause of the collision remains under investigation, officials confirmed that no members of the train crew sustained injuries. Details regarding the condition of the vehicle’s occupants have not yet been released.
A History of Hazardous Crossings
Thursday’s incident occurred just two miles away from another problematic crossing on Lake Drive, which has a documented history of severe accidents:
- May 2023: A CSX train collided with a semi-truck, dragging it nearly 1,000 feet and hospitalizing the driver.
- 2014: A garbage truck failed to stop at the crossing, resulting in a collision with an oncoming train.
- 2013: A major collision between a truck and a train triggered a massive chemical explosion in the area.
Resident Concerns and Safety Issues
Locals have long complained about the safety of these private crossings. Following past federal investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), drivers and residents highlighted two major hazards:
- Blocked Visibility: Overgrown trees and heavy vegetation frequently restrict the view of oncoming trains. Drivers noted they often have to pull onto the tracks just to see down the line.
- Lack of Safety Infrastructure: Unlike major public intersections, these specific crossings lack physical gates and flashing signals to warn drivers.
Local authorities and CSX are continuing their investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the Todds Lane crash.
