Pickaway County, Ohio: A 52-year-old Mt. Sterling woman is being remembered as a hero after she sacrificed her life to save her young grandson during a Friday morning crash in Pickaway County.
According to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 10 a.m. to a 911 call reporting a serious crash along Walnut Creek Pike.
When authorities arrived, they discovered a 2025 white Nissan Sentra had left the roadway, crossed through two residential yards, and slammed into a parked SUV in a driveway.
How the Crash Unfolded
Investigators said the driver of the Nissan was injured but conscious at the scene. He was transported to OhioHealth Berger Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials identified the woman who died as Laura Hammond, 52, of Mt. Sterling. She had been visiting her mother and was outside with her daughter and young grandson when the vehicle veered toward them.
Witnesses and deputies reported that Hammond saw the car heading directly toward her grandson and reacted instantly.
“Laura actually picked up the child and tossed him. At the end of the day, it saved his life,” Capt. John Strawser of the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office told reporters. “And when Laura tossed him, very unfortunately, she took the brunt of the vehicle.”
Pinned Between Vehicles
Authorities say Hammond was pinned between the Nissan Sentra and the parked SUV after pushing her grandson out of harm’s way. She was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
Her grandson suffered only minor injuries and was treated.
Law enforcement officials described Hammond’s actions as decisive and selfless, emphasizing that her quick thinking likely prevented a fatal outcome for the child.
Driver Investigation Underway
According to a police report, the driver told officers that his phone was ringing just before the crash and that he looked down at it moments before losing control.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has obtained a search warrant for the driver’s blood to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Officials said toxicology results could take six to eight weeks.
The crash remains under investigation.
Community Remembers a Hero
Capt. Strawser described Hammond’s actions as “very heroic,” adding that her decision to act without hesitation saved her grandson’s life.
“Laura Hammond is a hero, an absolute hero. She risked her life and this situation took her life to save her grandson’s,” he said.
Neighbors who spoke with local media described Hammond as caring and devoted to her family. Many expressed hope that the tragedy would serve as a powerful reminder for drivers to remain alert, avoid distractions, and slow down in residential areas.
A Family’s Loss
Hammond leaves behind:
- Her husband
- Three children
- Two grandchildren
Her death has deeply impacted the Mt. Sterling and Pickaway County communities, where she is now being remembered not only as a devoted grandmother but as someone whose final act was one of extraordinary courage.
Conclusion
The fatal crash on Walnut Creek Pike has left a family grieving but also grateful for the life saved through Laura Hammond’s bravery. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the role of distracted driving.
As the community mourns, many are echoing the same message: one moment of distraction behind the wheel can change lives forever.
