Third Suspect Arrested In Jackson Triple Homicide That Killed Toddler

JACKSON, MS – A third suspect has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with a targeted weekend shooting that left a 2-year-old boy, his mother, and his aunt dead inside a Jackson home.

The Victims

The Hinds County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Keyana Weathersby, 25, her son Camari Givens, 2, and her sister Erica Weathersby, 30. All three were found Saturday night suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in what officials described as a “horrifying” crime scene.

Three Suspects In Custody

The Jackson Police Department and assisting agencies have arrested three individuals, all facing capital murder charges and currently held without bond:

  • Mikayla Young, 25: Arrested Tuesday and denied bond during her initial court appearance on Wednesday.
  • Cornelius Carter, 28: Arrested Monday following a vehicle pursuit. He faces an additional charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and was reportedly wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the shooting.
  • Jordan Carter, 28: Also arrested Monday alongside Cornelius Carter.

Police recovered three firearms—including an AR-style pistol and a 9mm handgun—during the arrests. A red 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage belonging to one of the victims was also recovered after being stolen from the scene and abandoned.

A “Targeted” Attack

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney clarified that while a specific motive is not being released, the shooting was not random. Investigators have classified the incident as an intentional, targeted attack on the residence.

Federal agencies, including the FBI, are assisting local and state law enforcement with the ongoing investigation. Authorities noted that additional persons of interest have been identified.

Rising Violence Sparks Local Action

The triple homicide marks the 39th, 40th, and 41st homicides in the city this year. According to local law enforcement data, 38 of those 41 homicides resulted from gunfire.

In response to the tragedy, Jackson Mayor John Horhn announced plans to deploy additional public safety resources and introduce a collaborative community violence prevention initiative involving law enforcement, faith leaders, and mental health professionals.
