LEESBURG, GA – An 18-year-old Lee County High School student was killed in a tragic two-vehicle collision on Monday, June 3, leaving a local community mourning a young life cut short just one year after finding his forever home.
The Fatal Collision
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident occurred on the evening of June 3 in Terrell County. Authorities report that Robert Knight, 18, was driving northbound on Callis Road when his vehicle approached the intersection with State Route 32.
Police determined that Knight failed to yield at a stop sign, pulling directly into the path of a truck hauling a cattle trailer. Knight was ejected from his vehicle and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck survived the crash.
Officials noted that Knight was on his way to help his girlfriend’s family move when the accident happened.
A Story of Resilience and Family
Knight’s death comes just a year after a major turning point in his life. After facing a highly difficult upbringing and moving between various guardians, Knight was permanently taken in by his best friend Cayden Nelms’ family in May of last year.
His best friend’s mother, Heather Hearon of Lee County, officially finalized Knight’s adoption in July 2025. In a moving handwritten letter left to Hearon before his passing, Knight expressed his gratitude, writing, “You made my life so much better. You just don’t realize the burden you took off me.”
Community and School Mourn
Knight was highly active in the community and was taking courses at Albany Technical College. He was preparing to rejoin the Lee County High School football team for his upcoming senior year, with long-term aspirations of pursuing a career in residential construction.
Family and classmates remember him as a dedicated older brother figure to his adoptive siblings and a student who worked relentlessly to qualify for his school’s work-study program.
Funeral arrangements and community memorial details have not yet been publicly released by the family.
