Harford County, Maryland – A routine delivery turned into a life-saving act of courage when an Amazon driver rescued an elderly woman from a burning home in Harford County on Wednesday morning. The dramatic rescue happened just before 11:30 a.m. on Creek View Court in Street, Maryland, after neighbors noticed smoke pouring from the house.
According to witnesses, the driver did not hesitate. By the time neighbors reached the home, she had already stepped in to help, pulling the grandmother — who was alone at the time — to safety through a window.
Fire Breaks Out on Front Porch
Neighbors said smoke was visible from the front porch area of the home. The fire reportedly started after a bucket of ashes from a wooden stove was placed on the porch to cool down. Authorities later confirmed that the ashes reignited, sparking the blaze.
The flames spread quickly, creating dangerous conditions inside the home. With the fire blocking the primary exit, the grandmother had no safe way to leave.
Seeing the urgency of the situation, the Amazon driver rushed to the side of the house. Instead of attempting to enter through the front door, she located a sliding door or alternate opening and managed to reach the trapped woman. Working quickly, she helped her out through a window, guiding her safely away from the burning structure.
Family Expresses Deep Gratitude
Marques Chavis, the woman’s grandson, said he does not know the identity of the driver but is forever grateful for her bravery.
He described overwhelming gratitude for the stranger who stepped in during a terrifying moment, saying she saved his grandmother’s life. He added that he hopes she knows how thankful the family is for her selfless actions.
Officials said the outcome could have been far worse. Given how rapidly the fire was spreading, first responders believe the driver’s quick thinking and immediate action made all the difference.
Pets Also Rescued
In addition to the grandmother, two cats and a dog were also saved from the home. However, after escaping the house, the cats ran off. The family is asking anyone in the Harford County area who may see an orange cat or a black-and-white cat to come forward with information.
Fire Officials Issue Safety Warning
The incident has prompted an important reminder from fire officials, especially during colder months when wood stoves are commonly used.
Authorities emphasized that ashes from fireplaces and wood stoves can remain hot for hours — or even days — after they appear extinguished. Placing them on a porch or near a home can create serious fire hazards.
Fire officials recommend disposing of ashes in a metal container and placing the container at least 10 to 20 feet away from any structure. This precaution can significantly reduce the risk of accidental ignition.
