A man has been taken into custody following a robbery at a gas station in Galesburg early Monday morning, according to local authorities.
Police said officers were dispatched around 2:20 a.m. to a gas station in the 1500 block of East Main Street after receiving a report of a robbery in progress. When officers arrived, they spoke with an employee who reported being confronted by a suspect wearing a mask.
According to a media release, the suspect demanded money from the employee. Fearing for their safety, the employee complied and handed over cash along with additional items from inside the store. The suspect then fled the scene before officers arrived.
Following the robbery, officers conducted a search of the surrounding area. A short time later, police located a man matching the suspect’s description several blocks away from the gas station. The individual was identified as Maxwell Burton, 29.
Police said evidence connected to the robbery was found in Burton’s possession. He was taken into custody without incident and formally charged with robbery.
Burton was transported to the Knox County Jail, where he remains held pending further court proceedings. Authorities have not released additional details about the evidence recovered or whether a weapon was involved.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Police have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed or if Burton is connected to any other recent incidents in the area.
Anyone with information related to the robbery is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
