Sheriff Rescues Stranded Fawn Near Busy Kennewick Highway

KENNEWICK, WA – A potentially dangerous situation on Highway 240 turned into a heartwarming rescue after local law enforcement and community members teamed up to save a stranded baby deer.

Spotted Near Traffic

Benton County Sheriff Mike Clark was driving back from a regional law enforcement meeting when he noticed a petrified fawn near Columbia Park along Highway 240.

The baby deer had become trapped on the highway side of a fence, completely overwhelmed by the heavy volume of passing traffic. Meanwhile, its mother and sibling were watched helplessly from the safer side of the barrier.

A Team Effort Rescue

Recognizing the immediate danger to both the animal and oncoming drivers, Sheriff Clark pulled over to block the frightened fawn from darting into the road. Deputy Ortega arrived shortly after to assist with traffic control.

The rescue quickly became a community effort when local passersby, Alexandria and Lisa Goforth, stopped to help. Using a blanket provided by the citizens, Sheriff Clark safely secured the panicked animal and carefully lifted it over the fence, successfully reuniting it with its family.

Preventing a Chain-Reaction Crash

Local officials emphasized that a panicked animal running into highway traffic easily triggers severe multi-vehicle accidents. The quick thinking of the deputies and community members likely prevented a serious crash.

Following the rescue, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office extended a public thank you to Deputy Ortega and the Goforth family for their swift action.

Important Wildlife Reminder

While this specific rescue had a happy ending, wildlife officials remind the public to exercise extreme caution around young animals. Approaching wildlife can cause them to panic or lead to a mother rejecting her offspring due to human scent. In most cases, the safest choice is to immediately report the animal to local wildlife professionals.
