FLORENCE, Ky. – A man was critically injured Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle on a busy stretch of Turfway Road in Florence. Emergency crews responded quickly and transported the victim to a regional trauma center for treatment.
The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. in the 7100 block of Turfway Road, just east of Drexel Avenue. Authorities with the Florence Police Department confirmed that the crash involved a pedestrian and a passenger vehicle traveling through the area at the time.
What Happened on Turfway Road
According to police, a Hyundai Accent was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Turfway Road when it struck a man who was crossing the roadway. The circumstances surrounding why the pedestrian was in the roadway at that moment remain under investigation.
Officers said the collision took place along a heavily traveled corridor known for steady evening traffic, particularly during peak commuting hours. Turfway Road is one of the city’s main commercial routes, with restaurants, retail stores, and residential areas nearby.
Condition of the Victim
Following the crash, first responders transported the injured man to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for emergency medical care. Police described his condition as critical at the time of transport. However, authorities later confirmed that he was stable later Tuesday night.
Officials have not released the man’s name, pending notification of family members. No additional details about his age or hometown were immediately available.
Driver Cooperation and Investigation
Police stated that the driver of the Hyundai Accent remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Based on preliminary findings, authorities do not expect charges to be filed against the driver.
Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the crash, including visibility conditions, traffic patterns, and whether the pedestrian was crossing at a marked crosswalk. At this time, officials have not indicated that speed, impairment, or reckless driving were factors in the incident.
Safety Reminder for Motorists and Pedestrians
The crash highlights ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety along busy roadways, especially after dark. Reduced visibility, high traffic volume, and limited crossing points can all increase the risk of serious injuries.
Law enforcement officials routinely remind drivers to remain alert for pedestrians, particularly in commercial areas where foot traffic may be heavier. Pedestrians are also urged to use marked crosswalks whenever possible, wear reflective clothing at night, and stay aware of oncoming traffic before crossing multi-lane roads.
Turfway Road remained open following the incident, though traffic in the area was temporarily slowed while emergency crews worked at the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities encourage anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact local police with additional information.
