Titusville, Florida — A sweeping law enforcement crackdown across four Florida counties led to the seizure of more than 500 illegal gambling machines operating inside restaurants, nail salons, gas stations and so-called “sham arcades,” officials announced.
The large-scale operation targeted 39 separate locations in Volusia, Brevard, Duval and Flagler counties, according to the Florida Attorney General’s Office.
525 Machines Confiscated Across 39 Locations
Authorities said they confiscated 525 illegal gambling machines, describing the network as a sophisticated underground operation disguised as legitimate businesses.
“This isn’t just BINGO or Uno at the dining room table,” officials said, emphasizing the scope of the operation.
Investigators reported seizing approximately $190,000 in cash from various establishments. The machines included:
- Stand-up slot machines
- PC-based slot machines
- Tabletop gambling devices
- Coin-pusher machines
- Fish table gaming machines
According to authorities, these devices were operating inside bars, restaurants, gas stations and even storefront businesses such as nail salons and beauty supply stores.
Officials described some locations as full-scale illegal casinos hidden in plain sight.
Warehouses Now Filled with Seized Equipment
Authorities said two warehouses are now filled with confiscated gambling machines collected during the multi-county sweep.
Officials warned residents to be cautious about businesses offering gambling opportunities outside regulated casinos.
“If you want to go gamble, and you think, ‘Oh wow, it’s in a nail salon,’ that’s probably too good to be true. It is too good to be true,” one official said.
Arrests and Criminal Charges Filed
In Duval County alone, the operation resulted in:
- Five felony arrests
- 14 misdemeanor arrests
- 112 gambling machines seized
- More than $62,000 in funds confiscated
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrests as part of the broader enforcement effort.
Authorities say individuals caught operating illegal gambling businesses are often charged with misdemeanors, though officials argue that penalties are currently too lenient.
Calls for Tougher Penalties
State officials indicated they are pushing for legislative changes that would increase penalties for illegal gambling operations.
“The risk is not going to be worth the reward,” officials said, expressing optimism that felony-level charges may soon apply to such activities.
Law enforcement leaders also characterized illegal gambling operations as frequently linked to other serious crimes.
Officials: Illegal Gambling Tied to Broader Criminal Activity
Authorities described unlawful gambling establishments as “dangerous” and potentially connected to:
- Money laundering
- Drug trafficking
- Human trafficking
- Weapons violations
- Burglary
Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood criticized property owners who allow such businesses to operate.
“The operators and slumlord property owners who prop up these unregulated, illegal casinos are ripping off our residents and costing them their savings.”
Investigation Ongoing
Officials say the investigation remains active, and additional arrests or seizures could follow as authorities continue to dismantle the network.
