Stephenville, Texas — A North Texas community is mourning after a devastating overnight crash claimed the lives of a mother and her young son when a vehicle slammed directly into their home, according to authorities.
Police say the 18-year-old driver has now been charged with intoxication manslaughter and other serious offenses following the deadly incident.
Deadly Crash Shatters Family Home
The tragedy unfolded around 3:26 a.m. on March 22 in the 200 block of North Ollie Street in Stephenville, Texas.
According to the Stephenville Police Department, officers responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into a residence. When first responders arrived, they discovered multiple victims suffering from serious injuries inside the home.
Emergency crews from Erath County EMS and the Stephenville Fire Department rushed the injured to Texas Health Resources Stephenville for treatment.
Despite life-saving efforts, a woman and a young boy later died from their injuries.
Victims Identified as Mother and Young Son
Family members identified the victims as Barbara Rocha and her 7-year-old son, Alex.
Relatives said the mother and child were asleep in a bedroom when the vehicle crashed into the house during the early morning hours.
A second child who was inside the home at the time also suffered injuries but survived the crash.
The heartbreaking incident has left a grieving husband and father now facing the unimaginable task of planning funerals for both his wife and young son while caring for his surviving daughter.
Teen Driver Faces Serious Charges
Authorities identified the driver as 18-year-old Gracie Yates.
Police say she was immediately arrested after the crash and initially charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide. Jail records reportedly showed bonds totaling $29,000.
However, the investigation later led to additional and more severe charges.
According to a statement from the Texas Highway Patrol, Yates was arrested again on May 11 in Erath County and charged with:
- Intoxication manslaughter
- Injury to a child
Officials noted that intoxication manslaughter is considered a first-degree felony under Texas law.
Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding what may have caused the crash or the circumstances leading up to it.
Neighbor Describes Emotional Aftermath
The violent crash shook nearby residents awake and left neighbors stunned by the tragedy.
Neighbor Reese Skinner said he woke up to the sound of the impact and quickly realized something terrible had happened nearby.
“It hit hard, because, you know, you always think that crazy things will never happen to you or hit this close to home,” Skinner said.
Skinner later spoke with the victims’ husband and described feeling powerless in the face of such heartbreaking loss.
“He told me what had happened, but I just felt helpless,” Skinner said. “I wanted to help him, and all I could do is offer my condolences and a hug.”

Community Rallies Around Grieving Family
In the aftermath of the tragedy, neighbors say the community has already begun coming together to support the surviving family members.
Many residents have reportedly offered assistance, emotional support, and help with whatever the family may need moving forward.
“I’ll be over there. I’ll be helping out any way that I can,” Skinner said.
The heartbreaking crash has left many in Stephenville grieving while raising renewed concerns about impaired driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent families.
