London, Ohio – An Ohio man has been arrested and charged with murder months after his wife was found fatally stabbed inside their home, a case investigators say raised suspicions from the very beginning.
Authorities with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Kyle Long, 35, was taken into custody last week following a four-month investigation into the death of his wife, Rachel Long, who was discovered dead on October 23, 2025 at the couple’s residence in London.
Prosecutors say the investigation uncovered evidence that contradicted the husband’s initial claims about what happened that day.
Investigators said the case was treated as suspicious from the start because Kyle Long was the only other person inside the home.
Husband Initially Claimed Wife Took Her Own Life
According to a criminal complaint, Kyle Long called 911 shortly after the incident and told dispatchers that his wife had stabbed herself.
“My wife just stabbed herself. There’s no pulse, blood all over the place,” Long reportedly told authorities during the call.
When deputies arrived, Long said he had been watching television in another room while his wife went into the bedroom.
He told investigators he later heard laughter followed by screaming coming from the room.
According to his statement, he went to check on her and allegedly saw her stabbing herself in the face and neck, according to reports.
Autopsy Reveals Multiple Stab Wounds
Investigators soon found Rachel Long lying inside the bedroom in a pool of blood, authorities said.
A medical examination later revealed that she had suffered at least 17 stab wounds.
The autopsy determined Rachel Long died from multiple sharp force injuries.
Authorities also reported finding wounds on her hands that appeared to be defensive injuries, suggesting she may have tried to fight off an attacker.
Detectives say those findings raised questions about the initial explanation provided to police.
Evidence Suggested a Struggle Inside the Home
Court records show investigators also reviewed Rachel’s phone activity shortly before her death.
Officials said she had been texting a friend about plans to attend a concert, and the messages did not suggest she was suicidal.
Detectives say physical evidence inside the home also indicated there may have been a struggle.
During a second interview with investigators, authorities said Kyle Long made statements that did not match the timeline and details he originally provided.
Sheriff John Swaney said investigators believed the case needed further examination.
“From the beginning we investigated this as suspicious,” Swaney said.
Arrest Comes Four Months After Death
Following months of investigation, authorities arrested Kyle Long and charged him with murder.
Officials said investigators also learned that Rachel Long had reportedly been considering ending the couple’s marriage after 10 years together.
Long appeared in court after his arrest and is currently being held on $1.5 million bond, according to court records.
Defense Attorney Claims Client Is Innocent
Kyle Long’s attorney, Samuel Shamansky, said his client denies the allegations and plans to defend himself in court.
“He’s wrongly accused and eager to establish his innocence,” Shamansky said.
The attorney also noted that Long had cooperated with investigators during the months following his wife’s death.
According to Shamansky, Long had even met with the county coroner to answer questions about the case.
Community Remembers Victim
Rachel Long, a mother of two, was remembered by friends and family as someone passionate about animals.
According to her obituary, she owned a business specializing in pet grooming and boarding.
Friends described her as an animal lover who was also active in rescuing dogs.
She was also known for enjoying reading and attending rock concerts, according to family members.
As the case moves forward in court, investigators say the focus now shifts to determining what happened inside the home that led to her death.
