Fresno, California – A California community is mourning the loss of a 14-year-old high school student who collapsed during a physical education class and later died at the hospital, according to school officials.
Authorities identified the student as Daniel Padilla Jr., a freshman from Fresno, who suffered a medical emergency while participating in a basketball activity during P.E. class at Fresno High School on March 9.
Emergency crews were called to the campus after the teenager collapsed in the gymnasium during class.
School officials confirmed that the student who collapsed during P.E. later died at the hospital.
Emergency Call Made From School Gym
According to dispatch audio obtained by local media, a 911 call was placed around noon reporting an unconscious juvenile inside the school gym.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on campus and transported the student to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Despite efforts by medical professionals, Padilla was later pronounced dead the same day.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the student’s death.
School district officials said they are still awaiting further information before providing additional details.
School District Offers Support to Students and Staff
The Fresno Unified School District released a statement expressing condolences to the student’s family and the school community.
“Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and school community during this incredibly difficult time,” a district spokesperson said.
Officials also announced that mental health counselors and support staff would be available on campus to help students and teachers cope with the loss.
School staff members will also have access to counseling resources, and substitute teachers are being made available for educators who may need time away to grieve.
Family Remembers Teen’s Personality and Hobbies
Padilla’s family has begun sharing memories of the teenager while raising funds to support funeral expenses.
In a GoFundMe campaign created by his sister Hailey Valdovinos, the teen was described as a joyful and humorous person who loved spending time with family.
His family remembered him as a “silly kid who loved playing video games and cracking jokes.”
According to the fundraiser, basketball was one of Padilla’s favorite activities, along with watching movies and spending time with his siblings.

The fundraiser, which has already raised more than $10,000 toward an $18,000 goal, is intended to help the family with funeral and related expenses.
Cause of Death Still Unknown
Officials say Padilla’s death remains unexpected and unexplained, and investigators are waiting for medical findings to determine what caused the medical emergency.
The school district said it will continue supporting the family and the school community during the difficult period.
The Fresno Unified School District said counselors will remain available for students and staff as the community processes the tragedy.
