WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. — A house fire in Hernando County forced four people and three pets to evacuate their home after officials say a child accidentally started the blaze while playing with matches.
Fire crews from Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to the emergency around 9 a.m. Saturday at a home located in the 7400 block of Madrid Road in Weeki Wachee, authorities said.
Firefighters arriving at the scene reported smoke coming from the home, prompting a rapid response to contain the flames.
Fire Started in Bedroom, Officials Say
According to Hernando County Fire Rescue, the fire began in a bedroom inside the home.
Investigators determined the blaze started after a child was playing with matches, igniting materials in the room.
Photos released by fire officials show the bedroom sustained the most significant damage.
The images revealed ash covering the floor and a large hole burned through the ceiling, indicating the fire spread upward before crews extinguished it.
Another photo shared by firefighters showed dark burn marks above a vent in the kitchen area, suggesting smoke and heat traveled through parts of the home.
Firefighters Quickly Contain the Flames
Officials say firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire after arriving at the scene, preventing further damage to the structure.
Despite the quick response, the fire still caused enough damage to make the home temporarily uninhabitable.
Fortunately, all four residents and their three pets were able to escape the house safely, and no injuries were reported.
