ALLEGANY COUNTY, N.Y. — A decades-old mystery in upstate New York has taken a major step forward after authorities identified a man whose headless and handless body was discovered along a rural road more than five decades ago.
However, investigators say the person responsible for the killing remains unknown.
The remains were identified as Clyde A. Coppage, 35, whose body was discovered along Davis Hill Road in Andover, New York, in March 1970, according to the New York State Police.
Body Discovered Along Rural Road in 1970
Authorities say the victim’s body was found nearly 56 years ago along a quiet roadside in Allegany County.
Investigators determined at the time that the victim had been decapitated and had both hands removed, making identification extremely difficult.
Police said the victim had no clothing or personal items that could help identify him.
Because of the condition of the remains and the lack of identifying information, investigators were unable to determine who the man was for decades.
Despite numerous leads over the years, the case remained unsolved.
Victim Originally From Pennsylvania
Officials have now confirmed that Coppage was originally from Pennsylvania. Authorities said he had never been reported missing, which complicated early efforts to identify him.
Investigators believe the victim was killed and dismembered somewhere else before the body was transported and left on the rural road in Andover.
Breakthrough Comes After DNA Testing
The major breakthrough in the case came in June 2022, when investigators decided to exhume the remains to obtain a DNA profile.
Using advances in forensic technology, state police worked with the FBI to analyze the genetic evidence.
DNA testing ultimately allowed investigators to confirm the victim’s identity as Clyde A. Coppage.
The identification marks a significant development in a case that had remained a mystery for more than half a century.
Investigation Still Active
Although authorities now know the victim’s identity, investigators say the person responsible for the killing has not been identified.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Amity is continuing to investigate the case.
Officials are asking the public to come forward with any information related to Coppage or his death.

Investigators say any details about Coppage’s life or activities before his disappearance could help move the case forward.
Cold Case Remains One of Region’s Longest Mysteries
The case has remained one of the longest-running unsolved homicide investigations in the region.
Advances in DNA technology have helped authorities solve many cold cases in recent years, and investigators hope similar breakthroughs could eventually identify the person responsible for Coppage’s death.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue to pursue new leads.
