North Hills Shock: 13-Year-Old Suspected in Shooting Outside Sepulveda Middle School

North Hills Shock 13-Year-Old Suspected in Shooting Outside Sepulveda Middle School

NORTH HILLS, LOS ANGELES — A community is in shock after a 13-year-old boy was identified as the primary suspect in a shooting that took place directly in front of Sepulveda Middle School on Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which left a 17-year-old wounded, has sparked urgent conversations regarding campus security and juvenile violence in the North Hills area.

The shooting occurred around 3:00 PM, right as the school day was winding down. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers arrived at the scene to find a 17-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the thigh.

An Innocent Act Turned Violent

According to Cpt. Garrett Peyton of the LAPD, the victim was not a student at the middle school. Instead, he was performing a routine task that many local siblings do: walking toward the campus to pick up his younger brother or sister.

While the victim was on school property when the shots were fired, police clarified that the incident took place outside the school’s perimeter fencing. Initial reports suggest that the 17-year-old was not a pre-planned target, but rather the victim of an escalating situation. “There was some sort of an altercation before shots were fired,” police stated, indicating that a verbal or physical dispute preceded the violence.

The Suspect and the Lockdown

The suspect, identified by witnesses as a 13-year-old student at Sepulveda Middle School, remains at large. Although the teenager has not yet been taken into custody, investigators were able to recover and collect his firearm at the scene.

As the “loud bangs” echoed through the neighborhood, panic ensued. Alessandro Valdivia, a student at the school, described the terrifying moment:

“I was really nervous and shocked. We heard a couple of loud bangs. Then me and my friends started running. We saw a lot of people crowded, and everyone started running.”

In response to the proximity of the gunfire, the school principal immediately placed the campus on lockdown, calling for assistance from the Los Angeles School Police Department. The lockdown was finally lifted by 5:00 PM, allowing anxious parents to reunite with their children.

Community Safety and Next Steps

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and LAPD are working closely to ensure the safety of students returning to class. While two individuals were initially detained for questioning, they have since been cleared of involvement and released.

What happens next?

  • Increased Security: The principal confirmed that extra patrol officers will be stationed on and around the campus for the foreseeable future.
  • Mental Health Support: LAUSD is providing additional staff and mental health resources to help students process the trauma of the event.
  • Ongoing Investigation: Detectives are currently investigating whether the 13-year-old has any gang affiliations, though no definitive link has been established yet.

A Growing Concern for Parents

This incident highlights a terrifying trend of youth-involved gun violence in Los Angeles. Parents in North Hills are now calling for stricter monitoring of students and better preventative measures to ensure that a firearm never makes it near a school zone again.

How do you feel about the security measures at our local schools? Should there be more permanent police presence on campus, or is the solution found in better mental health resources?
