IOWA CITY, IA — A violent confrontation in the heart of downtown Iowa City left five people injured, including three University of Iowa students, during the early morning hours of Sunday, April 19.
The shooting, which occurred in the popular Pedestrian Mall (Ped Mall) area, has sent shockwaves through the campus community and prompted an urgent investigation by local and state authorities.
Chaos at the Ped Mall
According to the Iowa City Police Department, the incident began around 1:45 a.m. following a fight that broke out near Clinton and E. College Street. As officers arrived on the scene, they reportedly heard active gunfire echoing through the district, which is home to several popular student hangouts, including Donnelly’s Pub, TCB Pool Hall, and Brother’s Bar and Grill.
Police confirmed that five victims were transported to area hospitals. As of Sunday morning:
- One victim remains in critical condition.
- Four victims are listed in stable condition.
- Three of the injured have been confirmed as University of Iowa students.
University Issues ‘HAWK ALERT’
The University of Iowa initiated its emergency notification system, issuing a “HAWK ALERT” at 2:03 a.m. to warn students of the “confirmed victims” and the active scene downtown.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, University President Barbara Wilson expressed her devastation. “Moments like this can feel overwhelming. They can make a large campus feel suddenly very small,” Wilson said. She confirmed the school is in “close communication” with law enforcement and urged students to support one another during the recovery process.
State Resources Mobilized
Governor Kim Reynolds also addressed the shooting Sunday morning, calling it a “senseless act of violence.” Reynolds stated that she has been in contact with university leadership and has authorized the “full resources of the state” to assist in the manhunt and subsequent investigation.
Search for Suspects: ‘Persons of Interest’ Identified
As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made. However, the Iowa City Police Department has released an image of five persons of interest associated with the shooting.
While police have not specified the exact roles these individuals played in the fight or the gunfire, they are asking for the public’s help in identifying them. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the many businesses lining the Ped Mall.
