Lantana, Florida — A shocking case out of Palm Beach County has taken a dramatic turn after authorities arrested a man accused of killing a 35-year-old nurse who was found dead near a roadside following what investigators believe was a planned birthday meet-up.
Linda Campitelli, 35, was discovered unresponsive on the night of October 28, 2024, after multiple 911 callers reported a woman lying face down on the road and bleeding heavily.
More than a year later, authorities have arrested Rene J. Perez, 38, who investigators say was in regular contact with Campitelli and is now charged in connection with her death.
“Investigators believe the victim had arranged a private meeting shortly before she was found fatally injured.”
Victim found near vehicle in disturbing condition
According to officials, Campitelli was located just feet away from a vehicle registered to her husband.
Responding officers pronounced her dead at the scene after observing severe head trauma and significant injuries.
Investigators reported:
- A deep gash to her head
- Swelling and bruising around her eye
- Possible drag or scuff marks near the body
“The injuries and scene raised immediate concerns about foul play.”
Phone records reveal connection to suspect
Authorities say phone records showed frequent communication between Campitelli and a number linked to Perez, including text messages and intimate photos.
These records placed the two in close contact leading up to the night of her death.
Investigators allege the two had arranged to meet that evening.
Evidence suggests planned birthday meet-up
Photos recovered from Campitelli’s phone revealed details that investigators say point to a planned encounter.
Images showed:
- The backseat of a car prepared with medical sheets
- A decorative message reading: “Happy Birthday… hope your birthday is out of this world”
Text messages between the two also suggested anticipation ahead of the meeting.
“I love you… I feel a little nervous,” Campitelli allegedly wrote before the encounter.
Suspect’s statements reportedly inconsistent
According to investigators, Perez initially claimed that he had canceled plans with Campitelli that night. However, authorities say evidence collected during the investigation did not align with that account.

“Investigators allege the suspect’s statements conflicted with digital evidence and other findings.”
This discrepancy played a key role in building the case against him.
Charges filed, motive still unclear
Perez has been charged with:
- First-degree murder with a deadly weapon
- Tampering with physical evidence
Officials have not yet confirmed a clear motive in the case.
Court records do not currently indicate a plea, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Victim remembered as devoted mother and nurse
Campitelli’s family described her as a dedicated nurse and loving mother who cared deeply for her family.
According to her obituary, she had recently celebrated her 35th birthday and was preparing to start a new chapter in her career.
“She was remembered as someone who cared deeply for her family and patients alike.”
Case continues to unfold
Authorities continue to gather evidence as the case moves through the legal system.
The arrest has brought new attention to a case that had remained unresolved for over a year.
“Officials say the investigation is ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding her death.”
