ROSWELL, Ga. — The peace and tranquility of one of Roswell’s most popular nature escapes was shattered on Monday afternoon following reports of a man exposing himself to women on the trails.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, specifically near the trails at Old Mill Park. While the Roswell Police Department assisted in the search and eventual apprehension of the suspect, officials confirmed the incident took place on federal grounds managed by the National Park Service (NPS).
Incident Near Trail Marker VC-19
According to victims who spoke with local news outlets, the man targeted at least two women. One victim reported that the encounter took place near trail marker VC-19, a well-traveled section of the park.
The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the reports were made, thanks to a coordinated effort between local and federal authorities. However, as of Tuesday morning, the National Park Service has not yet released the suspect’s name or the specific list of charges he will face.
“A Little Bit Crazy”: Shocked Visitors React
Old Mill Park is widely considered a safe haven for Roswell residents looking to hike, photograph the historic ruins, or enjoy the river. For regular visitors, the news of an arrest for public indecency was a disturbing departure from the norm.
“I’m surprised, because I’ve never had any problems and I’ve been coming here for years,” said Katrina Lurns, a daily visitor to the park.
Susan Bohm, another frequent parkgoer, described the situation as “crazy” for such a peaceful area. Like many women who frequent the trails, Bohm noted that she already takes precautions. “I try not to come here alone,” she added, highlighting the reality that even in “safe” parks, situational awareness is key.
Safety and Jurisdiction on the Trails
Because Old Mill Park connects to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, jurisdiction is often split between the City of Roswell and the National Park Service. This means that while local police can assist, federal rangers often lead the investigations and subsequent prosecutions for crimes committed on the trails.
Authorities are currently looking into whether there were other victims who have not yet come forward.
Safety Tips for Trail Users
Following this incident, local safety advocates recommend that trail users:
- Carry a Phone: Ensure your device is charged and easily accessible.
- Know Your Location: Note trail markers (like VC-19) as you pass them so you can give dispatchers an exact location in an emergency.
- Trust Your Gut: If a person or situation feels “off,” turn around and head toward more crowded areas or the park entrance immediately.
What do you think, Roswell? Do you feel safe walking the trails at Old Mill Park alone, or has this incident changed your perspective? Should there be an increased ranger presence at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area?
