Santa Rosa County, Florida — A family kayaking trip along a Florida river ended in tragedy after an 18-year-old man was struck by lightning and thrown into the water, prompting a large-scale search that ultimately ended with the recovery of his body.
Authorities identified the victim as Michael Aiden Vargas, who was kayaking with his father on the Blackwater River when the deadly incident occurred.
Lightning Strike Turns River Outing Deadly
According to officials, Vargas and his father were kayaking on Sunday afternoon when a lightning strike suddenly hit the area.
Authorities say the 18-year-old was directly struck by lightning while on the river, causing him to fall from his kayak into the water below.
Witnesses reported that the incident happened within seconds, leaving those nearby scrambling to respond.
Vargas’ father, along with employees from Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation, immediately began searching the river after seeing him disappear into the water.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was notified of the emergency shortly before 12:30 p.m.

After an intensive search operation, authorities located Vargas in the water.
FWC confirmed that the teenager was found deceased.
The agency later released a statement expressing sympathy for his family and loved ones.
“The FWC extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Michael Aiden Vargas during this difficult time,” Florida FWC said in a statement.
