Indianapolis, Indiana — A recent Indiana University graduate described by loved ones as a future leader and role model was fatally shot in downtown Indianapolis while on his way to meet his parents for a baseball game.
The tragic death of 23-year-old Brett Scrogham has shocked family members, friends and community leaders who say the young man had an exceptionally bright future ahead of him.
Graduate Killed Near Downtown Parking Garage
According to reports, Scrogham suffered a fatal gunshot wound Thursday night in a parking garage near the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis.
Emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital, but he later died from his injuries. Investigators said a witness heard gunshots and saw another man fleeing the area after the shooting.
At this time, no suspect has been taken into custody, and authorities continue searching for answers. The motive behind the shooting has not been publicly disclosed.
Victim Was Meeting Family for Baseball Game
Family members said Scrogham was not involved in any confrontation and was simply heading to meet his parents for an evening outing.
According to reports, he was on his way to watch the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, when tragedy struck.
The sudden loss has left his loved ones devastated, particularly because the shooting occurred during what should have been a joyful family gathering.
Scrogham had recently celebrated a major milestone after graduating from the prestigious Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

Close family friend Dwayne Sawyer reflected on the tremendous potential many believed Scrogham possessed.
“He was about to change the world. I truly, truly, mean that. Brett was that spark; he had that x-factor, if you will,” Sawyer told WRTV.
He continued:
“Not only was he intelligent, articulate, young Christian man, he just had that something special still within him that I knew, we all knew, he was destined for greatness.”

Tribute Reaches the U.S. Senate Floor
Scrogham’s death gained national attention when Jim Banks honored him during remarks on the Senate floor.
Banks said people who knew Scrogham consistently described him as a caring and faithful individual.
“Though I never had the chance to meet him, it’s clear to me that Brett was really an incredible person. And now I’ll never get the chance to meet this bright young man,” Banks said.
The senator also referenced broader concerns about violent crime in Indianapolis while discussing the case.
Debate Over Public Safety Intensifies
During his Senate remarks, Banks criticized local leadership and criminal justice policies, arguing that violent crime remains a significant concern in Indianapolis.
“The Mayor of Indianapolis put out a weak statement that didn’t even mention Brett’s name, and so I wanted to come down to the floor and talk about who he was and what’s happening in Indianapolis,” Banks stated.
He also pointed to several recent homicide cases in the city and criticized local prosecutors.
“Ryan Mears is a prosecutor gone rogue. He refuses to keep violent criminals behind bars and is an absolute failure of a prosecutor,” Banks said.
The investigation into Scrogham’s killing remains ongoing as detectives continue searching for suspects and gathering evidence.
