NAPERVILLE, IL – Law enforcement teams flooded downtown Naperville Monday, resulting in nine arrests and nearly three dozen citations after groups of teenagers gathered and caused widespread disturbances.
Downtown Chaos Sparks Police Response
Following warnings issued over the weekend regarding potential “teen takeovers,” large crowds began gathering Monday afternoon. The activity was primarily concentrated on Washington Street, between Chicago Avenue and Van Buren Avenue.
As the evening progressed, the situation escalated into active disturbances, prompting a heavy deployment of law enforcement to maintain public safety and control of the area.
Multiple Arrests and Charges
Police confirmed that the nine individuals taken into custody included four adults and five juveniles. Notable arrests included:
- A 23-year-old Naperville resident apprehended on four outstanding warrants and charged with obstructing a peace officer.
- An 18-year-old from Romeoville arrested for attempted aggravated assault of a peace officer.
- Another adult arrested for battery and obstructing a peace officer.
The five juveniles face a variety of charges, including battery, assault, illegal possession of cannabis, obstructing identification, and disobeying peace officers. In addition, police issued 34 citations during the sweep.
Zero Tolerance Policy
The “teen takeover” trend, which has previously plagued downtown Chicago, has now begun shifting into surrounding suburbs, putting local police departments on high alert.
Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres made the department’s stance clear following the operation, stating that the era of warnings is over due to past disrespect and lawlessness. “If you break the law, there will be no warnings; there will be no second chances,” Arres warned, emphasizing that the city will continue to make immediate arrests to keep Naperville safe.
