Bear Attack Near Old Faithful Injures Two Hikers

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, WY – Authorities have closed several popular trails in Yellowstone National Park after a rare bear attack left two hikers injured on Monday.

The Attack at Mystic Falls

The National Park Service (NPS) confirmed that the incident occurred on the Mystic Falls Trail, a heavily trafficked area near the famous Old Faithful geyser. According to official statements, “one or more bears” were involved in the encounter.

Witness video from the scene showed one victim on the ground with visible facial injuries and blood-soaked clothing while awaiting emergency responders. Another victim was reportedly airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

First Incident of the Year

This marks the first bear-related injury recorded in Yellowstone for 2026. While bear encounters are a known risk in the park, officials noted that it has been over a decade since a fatal encounter occurred. The last fatality in the park was in 2015.

Marie Jaskula, a seasonal park employee who witnessed the rescue efforts, described the scene as a “reality check” for both staff and visitors regarding the dangers of the wilderness.

Area Closures and Safety

Following the attack, park officials immediately shuttered the Mystic Falls Trail and surrounding sections of the park to ensure public safety while the investigation continues.

Yellowstone officials remind all visitors to:

  • Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
  • Stay at least 100 yards away from bears at all times.
  • Hike in groups and make plenty of noise to avoid surprising wildlife.

The identities and current medical conditions of the two hikers have not yet been released.
