GARLAND, TX – A violent carjacking attempt ended in gunfire Sunday afternoon after a father opened fire to protect his family, including several young children, at a local shopping center.
The Initial Chaos
The incident began around 3:30 p.m. along Highway 66, about 18 miles from Downtown Dallas. According to the Garland Police Department, a suspect caused a multi-vehicle crash and fled the scene on foot.
The suspect then headed to a nearby gas station and shopping center, where witnesses say he attempted to “take several vehicles by force.”
The Confrontation
Surveillance footage captured the suspect approaching a white Chevy Impala. The vehicle was occupied by a father, two adult women, and several children. As the suspect tried to forcibly pull the father from the driver’s seat, a struggle ensued.
As the children and family members scrambled to escape the vehicle, the father produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect.
Self-Defense Investigation
The suspect, described as a Hispanic male, was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. His identity has not yet been released.
Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau stated that the father is cooperating fully with investigators and turned over his weapon at the scene.
“We are looking at this as a self-defense case,” Barineau told local outlets, noting that no charges are expected to be filed against the father for protecting his occupants.
Community Reaction
The shooting has sparked a strong reaction from Garland residents, many of whom praised the father’s quick actions. Local witnesses noted the suspect appeared to be in an altered state of mind prior to the attempted carjacking.
Thankfully, all members of the family, including the young children, escaped the encounter without physical injury.
