CHICAGO, IL — A popular street performer in the Loop is turning a frustrating incident into a positive lesson after his tip box was snatched during a live performance earlier this week.
Theft Caught On Camera
Andrew David, known for his melodic vocals, was in the middle of singing Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” for a crowd of tourists on Monday when a teenager approached.
Surveillance and performance video captured a juvenile in a grey hoodie and black face mask calmly grabbing David’s tip box before walking away. In the video, David can be heard calmly asking for the box back, choosing not to escalate the situation physically.
Community Support Pours In
Despite the loss of the donations, David decided not to file a police report or chase the individual. “I didn’t want to feed into any more negativity,” David said.
After posting the video online, the Chicago community rallied behind him. The footage eventually reached a local school, where officials recognized the individual involved.
From Crime to Classroom
In a surprising turn of events, David met with the principal of a high school in the Loop on Wednesday. Rather than seeking punishment, the performer hopes to use the incident as a learning experience for local students.
David aims to bridge the gap between downtown performers and the students who pass them daily, hoping to foster a sense of respect and understanding. “Life is funny that way,” David remarked, noting that the outpouring of support has already helped him recover what was lost.
