FONTANA, CA – Three men are in custody after allegedly holding a 79-year-old man at gunpoint and forcing him to withdraw $25,000 from a local bank, according to the Fontana Police Department.
The Grocery Store Ambush
The incident began on March 11 at an El Super grocery store in Fontana. Authorities say the suspects approached the victim and threatened to harm his daughter if he did not comply with their demands.
The victim was forced to drive to a Wells Fargo on Summit Avenue, where he withdrew thousands of dollars under duress. The victim’s son, speaking anonymously, expressed his outrage, stating he was angered that his father was targeted in such a manner.
Sophisticated Crime Ring Uncovered
Police believe the suspects are part of a sophisticated criminal organization originating from Colombia. This group specifically targets elderly Hispanic individuals across Southern California and the United States.
Following an intensive investigation, detectives tracked the suspects to Glendora, where they were arrested on Tuesday. The individuals have been identified as:
- Reinaldo Estrella, 52
- Jonathan Estrella, 29
- Kevin Bernal, 23
All three suspects face charges of robbery, kidnapping, and elder abuse.
Police Warning For Residents
Fontana Police suspect this group is part of a much larger “crew” victimizing residents throughout the region. Officials believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to contact their local police department immediately.
