ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL – A massive rescue effort is underway in St. Johns County after dozens of Chihuahuas were found abandoned in cages along a rural road, sparking outrage and a wave of community support.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
On Thursday, May 7, local pet advocacy groups responded to a distressing scene near County Road 204. Rescuers arrived to find crates left on the side of the road, with many dogs trapped inside and others wandering into the nearby woods.
Crystal DeSantiago with SAFE Pet Rescue described the scene as chaotic, noting that approximately 30 dogs were visible upon arrival. Sadly, rescuers reported that some animals had already succumbed to the elements or were struck by vehicles before help could arrive.
The Rescue Mission
So far, 18 dogs have been secured:
- 14 Chihuahuas are currently with Flagler Saving Missing Animals Response Team (SMART).
- 4 Chihuahuas were taken in by SAFE Pet Rescue in Treasure Beach.
Volunteers spent over three hours “wrangling” the animals. Caroline Johnson, founder of SMART, noted that many of the dogs are in poor condition—suffering from mange, flea infestations, and malnutrition. Several females appear to have been used for breeding and may currently be pregnant.
Community Response & Next Steps
The St. Johns County community has already begun reaching out to offer homes for the rescued pups. However, officials say it will take significant time and veterinary care before the dogs are healthy enough for adoption.
Traps remain set in the wooded areas near CR-204 to recover the remaining dogs that fled in fear.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not yet identified the individual responsible for abandoning the animals. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is looking into the case. Anyone with information regarding the origin of these dogs or who may have seen suspicious activity on CR-204 is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
