Beloved Talladega Veteran Known for 'Porch Waves' Dies After Brutal Stabbing Attack

TALLADEGA, AL — A community is in mourning after a local fixture known for his kindness and military service has passed away following a violent attack at his home.

J.W. McElrath, an 80-year-old Vietnam veteran, died Thursday night at UAB Hospital, according to Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy. McElrath had been fighting for his life in the hospital’s trauma unit since he was stabbed earlier this month in a crime that has shocked the North Main Avenue neighborhood.

The Attack on North Main Avenue

The incident occurred on April 8 at McElrath’s residence in the 800 block of North Main Avenue. According to reports and a GoFundMe page established by his son, McElrath was at his home when he was stabbed, leading to a frantic emergency response and a LifeFlight to Birmingham for specialized trauma care.

Neighbors describe McElrath as a cornerstone of the block. He was widely recognized for his daily routine of sitting on his porch and waving to everyone who passed by—a simple gesture that made him a beloved figure to residents and commuters alike.

Suspect in Custody as Charges Loom

Shortly after the stabbing, authorities arrested Tashae Whitson in connection with the assault. Whitson was originally booked into the Talladega County Jail on a charge of second-degree assault.

However, with the news of McElrath’s passing on Thursday night, the legal landscape of the case is expected to change. In many cases of this nature, the District Attorney’s office reviews initial charges to determine if they should be upgraded to manslaughter or murder following the death of the victim. As of Friday morning, Whitson remains in custody, and local officials have not yet confirmed when the formal upgrade of charges will take place.

A Veteran’s Legacy

McElrath was a proud Vietnam veteran, and those who knew him say his spirit of service never faded. His son’s online tribute described a man who survived the horrors of war only to be met with senseless violence in the safety of his own home.

The GoFundMe campaign, which was originally intended to cover mounting medical bills at UAB, will likely now shift toward funeral arrangements and a memorial befitting a veteran who spent his final years spreading positivity in his hometown.

Talladega Community Reaction

The “800 block” feels significantly emptier today. Local residents have started leaving flowers near the porch where McElrath spent so many of his afternoons. For many in Talladega, he represented a simpler, friendlier time, and his loss is being felt as a deep blow to the town’s social fabric.

“He didn’t have to know you to wave at you,” one local resident shared on social media. “He was just a good man who deserved a peaceful retirement.”
