Wiggins, Mississippi — A Mississippi community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a 31-year-old father and newlywed who was fatally shot while fishing at a local state park in what authorities are calling a possible “tragic accident.”
The devastating incident has left behind a grieving wife, young daughter, and loved ones struggling to process the sudden loss.
Father Found Dead at Popular Fishing Park
According to authorities, Jacob Nitkiewicz was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to the head at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday at Flint Creek Water Park, a well-known recreational destination located roughly 120 miles south of Jackson.
The park features a large lake popular for fishing, boating, and swimming, making the tragedy even more shocking for the local community.
Officials have not yet released many details about exactly how the shooting occurred, but investigators currently believe it may have been accidental.
Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry told the Sun Herald he believes the incident was a “tragic accident,” though an official autopsy is still pending.
Authorities Continue Investigating
Police described the shooting as an “isolated incident” and emphasized there is currently no threat to the public.
The Wiggins Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nitkiewicz’s death.
So far, officials have not announced whether anyone else was involved or if any charges could eventually be filed.
The limited information released has only added to the emotional weight surrounding the case as friends and family search for answers.
Family Left Heartbroken After Sudden Loss
Nitkiewicz’s death is especially devastating because he had recently entered a new chapter in life.
According to his obituary, he had been married to his longtime girlfriend, Mackenzi, for only four months after the couple spent 13 years together.
The pair had recently returned from their honeymoon in Colorado Springs, making the tragedy even more difficult for loved ones to comprehend.
He also leaves behind the couple’s young daughter, Emersyn Grace.
A GoFundMe created to support the family described him as a devoted husband and father whose family meant everything to him.
“Jacob was an incredible husband and a proud, loving father. He was the heart of their home, and his love for his family was constant and unwavering,” the fundraiser organizer wrote.
“Now, Mackenzi and their sweet daughter, Emersyn Grace, are facing the difficult road ahead without him.”
Remembered as a Dedicated Husband and Father
Friends and relatives say Nitkiewicz was deeply committed to his family and took pride in supporting them.
“He took immense pride in his role as a husband and father, pouring his heart into providing, supporting, and celebrating those he loved,” his obituary stated.
“Jacob recognized every milestone in Emersyn’s life with enthusiasm, from her dance and piano recitals to her strong grades and cheerleading tournament wins.”
His obituary also highlighted his recent promotion to manager at Delta Tire World, calling it “a testament to his dedication, leadership, and the pride he took in his work.”
Loved for His Passion for Life
Beyond work and family, Nitkiewicz was known as an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hiking, camping, and traveling.
“Jacob was a present, steady husband and father who prioritized time together and created meaningful memories that will be cherished for years to come,” his obituary said.
“His legacy is reflected in the love, encouragement, and dedication he showed each day.”
As investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened, the community remains focused on supporting a family forever changed by tragedy.
