Melville, New York — Drivers on the Long Island Expressway faced a terrifying scene Thursday afternoon after a massive sinkhole suddenly opened beneath the roadway, nearly swallowing a vehicle and forcing major traffic closures just before rush hour.
Authorities say the dangerous roadway collapse happened on the westbound side of the expressway near Exit 49 in Melville, causing immediate traffic disruptions and prompting emergency repairs.
Massive Sinkhole Opens Beneath Highway
According to Suffolk County police, the sinkhole opened shortly after 1 p.m., creating a massive crater measuring approximately 8 feet deep and 10 feet wide.
The collapse happened without warning, leaving drivers scrambling as traffic moved through one of Long Island’s busiest highways.
Officials said one vehicle narrowly avoided falling entirely into the sinkhole after it “partially entered the hole.”
Fortunately, despite the frightening situation, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.
Car Nearly Swallowed Whole
Images and video from the scene captured just how close the incident came to becoming much worse.
Photos showed the vehicle’s entire lower front section trapped inside the crater, while the front bumper appeared to catch on the edge of the pavement, preventing the car from dropping deeper into the hole.
The dramatic footage quickly spread online as stunned commuters reacted to the unusual and dangerous roadway collapse.
For many drivers nearby, the scene looked more like something from a disaster movie than a normal afternoon commute.
Major Traffic Delays Expected
The incident forced transportation officials to shut down two westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway, creating major backups ahead of the evening rush.
Officials warned commuters that the closures are expected to remain in place for at least 24 hours while emergency crews repair the damaged roadway.
“At this moment, the right and center lanes are closed, while the left and HOV lanes are open. Motorists should consider alternate routes,” a spokesperson from the Department of Transportation said Thursday evening.
The sudden lane closures caused significant congestion in the area as drivers searched for alternate ways around the affected stretch of highway.
Emergency Repairs Underway
Transportation crews quickly responded to the scene and began emergency pavement repairs shortly after the collapse occurred.
“Highway crews are on the scene conducting emergency pavement repairs with the goal of having all lanes reopened as promptly and safely as possible,” the Department added.
Officials have not yet confirmed what caused the sinkhole, though investigations are expected to determine whether aging infrastructure, underground erosion, or recent weather conditions may have contributed to the collapse.
Drivers Urged to Use Alternate Routes
Authorities are continuing to urge drivers to avoid the area if possible while crews work to stabilize and repair the roadway.
The incident serves as another reminder of how quickly infrastructure failures can create dangerous conditions for motorists, especially on heavily traveled highways.
Commuters across Long Island are expected to experience delays until repairs are fully completed and all lanes can safely reopen.
