Long Branch, New Jersey — A popular Jersey Shore beach town descended into chaos this week after hundreds of teenagers and young adults swarmed the area during an unauthorized gathering that forced police to intervene, make arrests and impose an emergency curfew ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
The disturbing scenes unfolded Tuesday night in Pier Village, a busy beachfront destination in Long Branch known for attracting tourists and visitors during the summer season.
Massive Crowd Sparks Chaos in Beachfront Area
According to authorities, several hundred young people converged on the area for what officials described as an illegal “pop-up” event. The crowd quickly spread through the boardwalk and surrounding streets, creating panic among visitors and local businesses.
Police said some members of the crowd were involved in fights and disruptive behavior, while others were allegedly seen jumping on parked vehicles as the situation escalated.
Videos shared online showed large groups of teens running through intersections near Chelsea Avenue and Ocean Avenue while officers attempted to regain control of the area.
Witnesses described a frightening and chaotic atmosphere as crowds surged through the streets.
“It really was a ton of people screaming, running,” Anthony Pizzi, who was staying at a nearby resort, told CBS New York. “Somebody pulled up the car right there and they just started jumping on the car.”
Resort Guests Forced Into Lockdown
As the crowd grew more aggressive, security concerns intensified throughout the beachfront district.
Pizzi said resort staff quickly reacted by warning guests to head inside for safety as officials worked to contain the situation.
“All of a sudden, the security for the resort came out and said we had to get in the resort [because] they were locking it down,” Pizzi said.
The scene left many visitors shaken, especially as police sirens and large groups of running teenagers filled the streets near the waterfront.
More Than 130 Officers Respond
The Long Branch Police Department launched what officials described as an “all-call and mutual aid activation” in response to the growing unrest.
In total, 139 officers from multiple law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the area to help control the crowds and prevent further damage or injuries.
Police in riot gear eventually pushed the crowd away from the center of the Pier Village District, dispersing people from the area by approximately 9:15 p.m.

Authorities confirmed that six people were arrested during the incident, though additional details about the charges have not yet been released.
Emergency Curfew Implemented
In response to the disturbance, city officials imposed an 8 p.m. curfew Tuesday night in an effort to restore order and prevent additional problems.
Officials also revealed that a “substantial portion” of the crowd had traveled into Long Branch by train, creating major transportation disruptions during the height of the chaos.
New Jersey Transit reportedly experienced delays of approximately 30 to 45 minutes as authorities managed the situation.
Officials Warn Against Future Gatherings
City leaders emphasized that Long Branch would continue taking aggressive action against similar gatherings moving forward, especially with Memorial Day weekend approaching.
“The City of Long Branch takes these events seriously and will not tolerate conduct that endangers residents, visitors, business owners, or our public safety personnel,” Long Branch Business Administration and Director of Public Safety Charles Shirley said.
“Pop-up gatherings of this nature have repeatedly disrupted Jersey Shore communities, and Long Branch is prepared to act decisively whenever public safety is threatened.”
The incident has renewed concerns about unauthorized social media-organized gatherings that have increasingly disrupted beach towns and tourist destinations across the Jersey Shore.
