Muncie, Indiana — A horrifying Mother’s Day shooting in Indiana has left a young woman dead, two Good Samaritans seriously injured and three small children discovered living in disturbing conditions inside a home, according to prosecutors.
Authorities say the violent incident unfolded on May 10 in Muncie, about 60 miles outside Indianapolis, after a woman attempted to flee an allegedly abusive relationship.
Woman Allegedly Chased and Dragged Down Sidewalk
According to investigators, 21-year-old Rylynn Joshua Davis attacked his girlfriend, 23-year-old Cheyenne Raines, inside their home before she attempted to escape.
Police said Raines fled the residence at around 5:30 p.m., but Davis allegedly chased after her, caught up with her and assaulted her again before dragging her by the feet back toward the house.
The terrifying scene unfolded in public view as Raines screamed for help while being pulled down the sidewalk.
Two passing motorists, later identified as Michael Hennessey, 40, and Jeremy McKee, 39, noticed the disturbance while driving through the neighborhood.
Hennessey initially believed the situation was harmless.
“Two kids messing around,” he told Fox 59 — until he realized “it was a guy dragging a girl down the road by her ankles.”
The two men immediately stopped their pickup truck to intervene and help Raines.
Good Samaritans Shot Trying to Help
Prosecutors say Davis responded by opening fire on the men as they attempted to stop the assault.
According to Hennessey, chaos erupted within seconds.
“I jumped out my door, ducked behind the truck, and I seen Jeremy and her both laying on the ground,” Hennessey said. “Almost as soon as I switched directions, it felt like I got hit with a baseball bat.”
Authorities allege Davis then turned the gun on Raines during the shooting before fleeing back inside the home.
Emergency crews arrived to find three gunshot victims outside the residence and rushed all of them to the hospital.
Victim Pronounced Dead at Hospital
Raines later died from her injuries at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
Court documents state she suffered “numerous gunshot wounds to her face, chest, abdomen, and back.”
McKee was reportedly shot in the head and remains hospitalized, while Hennessey suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was released after spending seven days recovering.
Police later surrounded the residence before Davis eventually surrendered without further violence.
Children Found Living in “Deplorable Condition”
Inside the home, investigators discovered three young children — ages 3, 2 and 3 months — locked inside a room.
Authorities described the children’s living conditions as horrifying, saying the room was “covered in dirt and feces” and that the children were living in “deplorable condition.”
The disturbing discovery added several additional charges against Davis, including neglect of a dependent.

Suspect Faces Multiple Serious Charges
The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Davis with murder, attempted murder, kidnapping with serious bodily injury, aggravated battery, criminal confinement, domestic battery and multiple additional offenses.
Investigators also revealed that Raines had allegedly attempted to leave Davis days earlier on May 8, but he refused to let her go and allegedly assaulted her during that incident as well.
On Mother’s Day, she reportedly tried once again to escape moments before the deadly shooting occurred.
Davis denied intentionally shooting Raines and claimed he acted in self-defense, telling investigators the handgun belonged to her.
He is currently being held without bond in the Delaware County Jail. If convicted on the murder charge alone, he could face up to 65 years in prison.
