FAIRFIELD, CA – A high school graduation celebration turned into a tragedy Wednesday night when gunfire erupted outside the venue, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
Chaos After Commencement Ceremony
The shooting unfolded shortly after 8:00 p.m. following the commencement ceremony for Sem Yeto High School, which was being held at Fairfield High School’s Schafer Stadium.
According to school district officials, the graduation ceremony had already concluded, and families were gathering in the parking lot to take photos when the shots were fired. Witnesses described hearing sudden gunfire, prompting graduates and families to run for safety.
Emergency Response and Investigation
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed that law enforcement swarmed the campus immediately following the incident.
Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez initially announced the active shooter situation on social media, later noting that a police chase was underway in Fairfield as authorities pursued leads.
“Kind of traumatized for everyone here who had to witness it. It’s outrageous,” said Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea.
Search for the Shooter Ongoing
While a livestream of the graduation did not capture the shooting itself, police are actively gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses in the parking lot area.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or descriptions of any suspects. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Fairfield Police Department immediately.
