San Francisco, California — Drivers traveling through San Francisco this Memorial Day weekend are being warned to prepare for delays and traffic congestion as a major repaving project shuts down large portions of one of the city’s busiest roadways.
The closure affects 19th Avenue between Sloat Boulevard and Holloway Avenue, a heavily traveled corridor used daily by commuters and visitors across the city.
Major Weekend Closure Already Underway
According to Caltrans, the closure began at 7 a.m. on Friday, May 22, and is scheduled to remain in effect until 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25.
During the 75-hour construction window, crews will continue extensive repaving work aimed at improving road conditions along the busy stretch of highway.
Officials said the project impacts traffic in both directions, though limited access will remain available for local residents and public transportation.
Multiple Lanes Closed on Busy Roadway
Caltrans stated that two out of three northbound lanes on 19th Avenue will remain closed throughout the project timeframe.
Meanwhile, two out of three southbound lanes will also be shut down nightly between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Only one lane in each direction will stay open for public transit vehicles and local access during the construction work.
Because of the limited traffic flow, transportation officials are strongly encouraging drivers to avoid the area if possible and seek alternate routes throughout the holiday weekend.
Drivers Encouraged to Use Alternate Routes
To reduce congestion, Caltrans is advising motorists to use Junipero Serra Boulevard, which runs parallel to the impacted section of 19th Avenue.

The agency also recommended using public transportation whenever possible, especially during peak travel periods tied to the Memorial Day holiday.
With increased weekend traffic expected across the Bay Area, officials warn that delays could become significant near the construction zone.
Part of Larger Repaving Project
The latest closure marks the final phase of a larger multi-weekend repaving effort targeting 19th Avenue, one of San Francisco’s most heavily used roadways.
During previous weekend closures, crews already repaved sections between Sloat Boulevard and Lincoln Way.
Officials said the strategy of performing work over several weekends instead of continuous weekday closures dramatically reduced disruption for commuters.
According to Caltrans, completing the project over three weekends shortened the overall public impact from an estimated 40 days down to just 10 days.
Officials Say Plan Minimizes Long-Term Disruptions
Transportation officials defended the temporary inconvenience, saying the accelerated construction schedule was designed to minimize long-term traffic headaches for residents and travelers.
Repaving projects are considered critical for improving roadway safety, reducing wear and tear on vehicles and extending the lifespan of heavily traveled roads.
Still, drivers are being advised to allow extra travel time, monitor traffic conditions and avoid the closure area whenever possible until construction wraps up Monday morning.
