Indiana Deputy Shot 3 Times After Stopping to Help Stranded Driver Who Opened Fire Inside Hospital ER

Michigan City, Indiana — An Indiana sheriff’s deputy is fighting for his life after authorities say he was shot three times by a stranded motorist he had stopped to help before the violence erupted inside a hospital emergency room.

The shocking shooting happened Friday morning and has shaken law enforcement agencies across Indiana and Illinois.

Deputy Stops to Help Stranded Driver

According to investigators, La Porte County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Samuelson, 33, was driving to a training session around 6:45 a.m. when he noticed a stranded motorist along State Road 2.

Authorities said Samuelson stopped to assist the driver, later identified as Sharod Grafton Jr., a resident of Chicago.

At some point during the interaction, Samuelson transported Grafton to Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City at the man’s request.

What initially appeared to be a routine act of assistance soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

Shooting Erupts Inside Hospital Emergency Room

Police said Samuelson later learned that Grafton might have been connected to an earlier criminal incident.

“Once at the hospital, the officer learned that the subject may have been involved in an earlier criminal incident,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield told reporters.

Authorities said the deputy then returned inside the hospital, where an altercation broke out between the two men inside the emergency room.

“The officer returned inside the hospital where an altercation took place in the emergency room between the suspect and himself, which resulted in the suspect producing a firearm and shooting the officer.”

Investigators said Samuelson was shot three times during the attack.

Emergency responders rushed the wounded deputy for treatment before he was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Suspect Captured After Brief Manhunt

Following the shooting, authorities said Grafton fled from the hospital area into nearby woods.

Law enforcement officers quickly launched a search operation and located him within minutes.

Police confirmed that a handgun believed to have been used during the shooting was recovered after his arrest.

Authorities have not publicly identified the earlier crime Grafton was allegedly connected to.

He is currently being held in the Porter County Jail, while formal charges remain pending.

Officials Call Shooting “Senseless”

Law enforcement officials strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that the deputy was simply trying to help someone in need.

“This is a senseless shooting that didn’t have to take place,” Fifield said.

“Our officers and deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department and all over the state of Indiana and Illinois risk their lives every day. This officer thought he was helping a stranded motorist and it turned into this.”

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as isolated and stated there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Deputy Comes From Law Enforcement Family

Authorities said Samuelson has served with the sheriff’s office for 12 years and comes from a deeply rooted law enforcement family.

His grandfather reportedly served as the police chief for the city of La Porte, while his father is a retired Michigan City police officer.

Officials also shared that Samuelson is married and has no children.

Community members and fellow officers have since rallied around the injured deputy and his family.

“La Porte County friends and neighbors, we are asking for our community to rise up, rally together, and lift Deputy Jon Samuelson and his family in prayer and support during this incredibly challenging time,” La Porte County Sheriff Ronald Heeg said.

Meanwhile, Franciscan Health confirmed that the hospital emergency department temporarily went on ambulance bypass following the shooting, though walk-in patients continued to be accepted through the main entrance.
