Modesto, California — A California community is mourning after a devastating triple homicide claimed the lives of three generations of the same family, including a newborn baby who was only two weeks old.

Authorities have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the killings, which police described as a tragic and violent crime that unfolded inside a Modesto home.

Police Discover Gruesome Scene Inside Family Home

According to the Modesto Police Department, officers responded to a residence in the 1600 block of Monterey Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. on May 28.

When officers arrived, they discovered multiple victims suffering from severe stab wounds.

Investigators identified the deceased victims as 23-year-old Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez and her mother, 54-year-old Maria Silvia Nunez-Villalobos.

Also found critically injured inside the home was Fabiola’s 2-week-old son, who had suffered stab wounds.

The infant was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries. Family members later identified the baby as Mateo Gonzalez.

Young Child Survives Attack

Authorities also discovered a 3-year-old child alive inside the residence. The child was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation following the incident.

Police later confirmed that Child Protective Services assumed custody of the child at the request of investigators.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the child’s condition but confirmed the youngster survived the attack.

Massive Search Leads to Suspect’s Arrest

Following the discovery of the victims, officers immediately launched a search operation after evidence suggested the suspect was still nearby.

“During the initial response, officers quickly established a perimeter after information gathered at the scene led investigators to believe the suspect remained in the area,” police officials said.

“The Modesto Police Department’s Hostage Negotiation Team, SWAT, and Investigations Division responded to assist.”

The investigation prompted significant safety concerns in the surrounding community.

A nearby school was temporarily placed on lockdown while officers searched for the suspect. Students and staff were later relocated to another campus for reunification with their families.

Suspect Found Hiding Nearby

Investigators eventually identified the suspect as Joaquin Escoto.

Police later located Escoto hiding inside a nearby residence and took him into custody without further incident.

According to investigators, Escoto is believed to have lived in the home with the victims.

Authorities also stated he is believed to be the father of both the deceased infant and the surviving 3-year-old child.

He was reportedly involved in a relationship with Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez, although investigators have not fully clarified the nature of that relationship.
