Birmingham, Michigan — A proposal to open a new Dollar Tree store in one of Michigan’s most affluent communities has sparked sharp debate among residents, with supporters and critics clashing over what the discount retailer could mean for the city’s future.

Residents Launch Petition Against Store
A group of local residents has organized opposition to the project through a petition on Change.org, arguing that the proposed store could negatively affect the community.
As of Wednesday evening, the petition had collected more than 500 signatures from residents and supporters.
The petition claims that introducing a Dollar Tree to the area could undermine the character of the city and create concerns for nearby neighborhoods.
According to the petition, the project “threatens to disrupt this balance and could have far-reaching implications for the safety and well-being of our residents.”
Organizers also raised concerns about the store’s proximity to schools.
The petition further argued that “the presence of a dollar tree in such close proximity [to schools] raises concerns due to the well-documented correlation between dollar stores and increased crime rates.”

“Infinitely better uses for the space … I’m a former retail marketing consultant and remain an avid retail watcher,” he wrote. “There is no shortage of better suited retail options to fill the space. A dollar store is the lazy alternative.”
Another supporter, identified as Mark, shared a shorter message expressing frustration with the proposal.
“#NoCheapStoresInBirmingham.”
The comments reflect concerns among some residents that the retailer may not align with Birmingham’s upscale image and business environment.
Other Residents Unbothered by Proposal
Not everyone in the community opposes the project.
According to local reports, several residents told reporters they do not see a problem with a Dollar Tree opening in the city.
Some argued that consumers should have access to a wider range of shopping options regardless of the community’s average income level.
Others suggested that affordable retail stores can benefit residents facing rising costs and inflation.
The differing opinions have highlighted broader discussions about retail diversity and economic accessibility in affluent communities.
Dollar Tree Defends Expansion Plan

According to the company, customer data shows a growing number of shoppers earning more than $100,000 annually are visiting its stores.
