Indianapolis, Indiana — A 14-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Brett Scrogham, a recent Indiana University graduate whose death shocked the Indianapolis community and devastated those who knew him.
Authorities announced the arrest Wednesday, nearly two weeks after the 23-year-old was gunned down in a downtown parking garage while heading to meet his parents for a baseball game.
Teen Arrested in High-Profile Shooting Case
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the juvenile suspect was taken into custody for his alleged role in the deadly shooting that occurred on May 28 near the Indiana Convention Center.
Investigators believe the shooting took place on the third floor of a parking garage and are examining whether it may have been connected to a possible carjacking attempt.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released because of his age, is currently being held without bond as authorities work with prosecutors to determine formal charges.
Because the accused is a minor, the case will initially proceed through juvenile court.
Police Chief Calls Case Heartbreaking
During a press conference announcing the arrest, Indianapolis Police Chief Tanya Terry reflected on the tragedy and its impact on everyone involved.
“While today’s arrest is significant, my heart breaks for everyone impacted by this tragedy. A young man lost his life, and another now faces allegations that will change his life forever,” Terry said.
She also emphasized that the arrest does little to ease the pain felt by the victim’s loved ones.
“While today’s announcement marks an important step forward in this investigation, it cannot heal or ease the pain felt by Mr. Scrogham’s family, friends, and loved ones. This case is a tragic reminder that a single act of violence can alter countless lives in an instant.”
Terry later expressed frustration over the suspect’s age.
“I’m frustrated and disheartened to tell you the person we believe is responsible is a 14-year-old child. Let that sink in,” she said.
Victim Was a Rising Young Professional
Scrogham’s death sent shockwaves through the Indiana University community and beyond.
The 23-year-old had recently graduated as a top-100 student from the Kelley School of Business, one of the university’s most respected academic programs.
On the day of the shooting, he was reportedly on his way to meet his parents and attend a game featuring the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Friends and family described him as exceptionally talented, compassionate and driven.
“He was about to change the world. I truly, truly, mean that. Brett was that spark; he had that x-factor, if you will,” close family friend Dwayne Sawyer said.
Political Leaders React to Tragedy
The case also drew attention from elected officials, including Jim Banks, who honored Scrogham on the Senate floor.
Banks described the young graduate as “a God-fearing Christian man” and criticized what he viewed as a lenient approach toward violent crime.
“If we keep making excuses for why we can’t enforce the law and keep violent criminals in prison, we will never have safe neighborhoods and communities — and innocent people like Brett will continue to pay the price,” Banks said.
Call for Parents and Community Involvement
Following the arrest, Terry urged parents and community members to take a more active role in preventing youth violence.
“You are not entitled to other people’s property. We will hold you accountable, but to everybody else that has a touch point in these kids’ lives, do your job. Be proactive, not reactive,” Terry told Fox 59.
She also emphasized the importance of parental involvement.
“If you’re a parent and need help with your kids, it’s your responsibility to ask for some help,” she said. “Parenting is not passive. You don’t get to say my kid is a teenager, they’re off doing God knows what. It’s your responsibility to know what that is. Be nosy. Be involved. Ask questions.”
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors continue reviewing the case.
