CHICAGO, IL – A 35-year-old cyclist lost his life Friday afternoon after a horrific multi-vehicle accident in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood.
The Incident on Halsted Street
The fatal crash occurred around 4:40 p.m. in the 3200 block of South Halsted Street. According to Chicago Police, the man was riding in the designated bike lane when the incident unfolded, leaving his mangled bicycle in the middle of the roadway.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
Witness Accounts of “Dooring” Incident
While police are still verifying the exact details, witnesses at the scene reported a chain-reaction event. They stated that a parked car driver opened their door directly in front of the cyclist.
The man allegedly hit the door, lost control, and fell into the traffic lane, where he was subsequently struck by a passing semi-truck. According to witnesses, both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators.
Infrastructure and Legal Concerns
The stretch of Halsted Street where the crash happened does feature a bike lane, but local advocates note it is not concrete-protected, leaving cyclists vulnerable to traffic.
Furthermore, Chicago Municipal Code strictly prohibits drivers from opening vehicle doors into moving traffic unless it is entirely safe and does not interfere with other commuters.
No citations or charges have been officially announced as the Chicago Police Department continues its investigation.
