Man Dies After Sweeping Over 600-Foot Nevada Fall In Yosemite

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CA – A 22-year-old man lost his life after being swept over the iconic 594-foot Nevada Fall in Yosemite National Park, despite a heroic rescue attempt by a bystander.

Tragic Incident at Nevada Fall

The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 20, when the victim, identified by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office as Josue Baires Alfaro, entered the water upstream from the thundering waterfall.

Park officials and emergency personnel responded to the scene, and a full investigation into how Alfaro entered the powerful current is currently underway.

Heroic Lifesaving Attempt

Freesia Gaul, a 20-year-old former volunteer lifeguard visiting the park with her family, witnessed Alfaro struggling in what appeared to be calm water but carried a treacherous undercurrent. Gaul immediately dove into the water fully clothed to save him.

The rescue attempt quickly turned into a fight for survival as the intensifying rapids pulled both of them toward the edge of the 594-foot drop.

“When you see someone like that, when you make direct eye contact with someone who you know is going to go over, you can’t turn around,” Gaul stated.

A Near-Fatal Rescue

As Gaul struggled against the slippery rocks and fast-moving water, a bystander on the bank extended a walking stick. After initially missing it, Gaul managed to grab the stick on a second attempt, pulling herself to safety just moments before watching Alfaro sweep over the edge.

Search and rescue crews, assisted by a helicopter, arrived approximately an hour later and recovered Alfaro’s body from the water below. Officials confirmed he did not survive the fall. Alfaro was visiting the park with his family at the time of the tragedy.
