Loose Kangaroo Safely Captured After Hopping Through Richmond Neighborhoods

RICHMOND, KY – An unusual wildlife search ended safely in Madison County after a pet red kangaroo named Hunter escaped from his enclosure and spent hours hopping through local residential areas.

The Great Escape

The marsupial’s unexpected journey began when he managed to slip away from a property located in Richmond’s Battlefield Subdivision. Not long after, Kentucky State Police received reports from startled residents who spotted the kangaroo navigating the Gibson Bay area.

Richmond Animal Control, alongside state fish and wildlife officials, quickly launched a coordinated search. Thankfully, Hunter was located and returned to his owner completely unharmed.

The Legal Loophole

While the incident wrapped up safely, it has brought attention to a unique legal gap regarding exotic pets. In Kentucky, no permit is required to own a kangaroo, though a permit is necessary to transport one into the state.

Local officials note that loose exotic animals can pose significant risks. A frightened kangaroo can easily dart into oncoming traffic, cause vehicle accidents, or inadvertently injure itself or residents while disoriented in a suburban environment.

Local Residents React

The bizarre sighting quickly became a viral sensation on local social media pages, with Richmond residents finding plenty of humor in the situation.

When local outlets posted updates, community members quickly jumped in with jokes. One resident commented on the absurdity of the alert, writing, “Love how they posted a picture of the kangaroo so that citizens wouldn’t mistake it for one of Richmond’s local kangaroos.”

Others joked about recent local wildlife sightings, with one user posting, “Thank God, I thought the mountain lion might have eaten it,” referring to a mountain lion recently caught on a Richmond doorbell camera.
