Nantucket, Massachusetts — Beachgoers on Nantucket’s south shore witnessed an unforgettable scene over the weekend when a fisherman hooked a great white shark, pulled it onto the beach, and then quickly released the powerful predator back into the ocean.
The dramatic encounter, captured on video, has drawn widespread attention online after showing veteran angler Elliot Sudal wrestling with the shark in an effort to safely remove the hook before sending it back into the water.
According to Sudal, the catch was completely unexpected and marked a milestone moment in his years of fishing along the Massachusetts coastline.
Unexpected Catch Turns Into a Rare Encounter
Sudal was surf fishing on Nantucket’s south shore on Sunday when he hooked what initially seemed like another large fish.
As he reeled it closer to shore, however, he noticed a distinctive fin breaking through the water and quickly realized he was dealing with something much more significant.
The fisherman said the roughly seven-foot shark turned out to be a great white, one of the ocean’s most recognizable predators.
Despite years of experience catching other shark species, Sudal said it was his first encounter with a great white in Nantucket.
“Caught 1000-plus sandbars and hundreds of duskys off the beach, tagged most of them along the way,” Sudal said. “By no means was targeting that white, you can’t control what picks up your bait.”
The rare catch immediately attracted the attention of people nearby, many of whom watched in amazement as the shark was brought onto the shoreline.
