Minor Arrested After Jersey City Acid Attack Injures Six

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Six people, including three teenagers, were injured Monday in a horrific chemical attack on Wilkinson Avenue, leading to the arrest of a minor.

The Attack on Wilkinson Avenue

According to the Jersey City Police Department, the incident occurred when two individuals riding a moped drove past a group of people. One of the riders threw a corrosive liquid, believed to be sulfuric acid, directly onto the crowd.

One of the victims, a 21-year-old woman, sustained severe second-degree burns to her face and scalp. She was rushed to the Saint Barnabas Burn Unit for specialized treatment. The exact condition and extent of the injuries to the other five victims have not been fully released.

Investigation and Arrest

A preliminary investigation indicates that the chemical assault may have stemmed from a dispute involving a large group of people earlier in the day.

On Tuesday, police confirmed that a minor has been arrested in connection with the attack, with official charges still pending. Authorities are still searching for the second individual who was on the moped during the incident.

City Leadership Responds

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon released a statement condemning the violence and confirming that all necessary police resources have been deployed to solve the case.

“My thoughts are with those hurt in this horrific attack, and I want our communities to know that violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets,” Mayor Solomon said.

The Dangers of Sulfuric Acid

Medical experts warn that sulfuric acid is highly corrosive. It rapidly destroys human tissue upon contact, causing immediate cell death, severe chemical burns, and permanent scarring. In extreme cases, high exposure to the substance can be fatal.
